Rock The Bells Miami Edition — Damnnnn… Classic Day!!!!!
Damn son. I’m still buggin over Rock The Bells this past Saturday. The whole event was nuts. Way too much to cover.. But basically, if you missed this day, please hand in your hip-hop pass. You’re an idiot.
The day started around 3pm.. And it was HOT. Just like my homie Bernbiz put it, “hotter than a witch’s tits”. I stayed my ass up under the rooftop in the shade for most of the opening acts.
But don’t get it twisted, these opening acts weren’t the usual half-assed clowns that picked up a mic and started rapping last week. The opening acts were killer, and could definitely headline a show in their own right. Started off with Fresh Air Fund, whose beats sounded nice and crispy over the sound system. Then South Beach heroes MAYDAY killed their set as well.
And the show kept moving along. I was surprised to see how well the show was organized. There was never really a long pause between acts, and everybody killed it. Icewater, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Immortal Technique all did their thing. Felt like an anti-Bush rally when Technique was performing. He had the crowd going wild.
It was a breath of fresh air though when Pharoahe Monch came on with the live band. His energy was incredible, and just came off as one of the better sets to me. Followed by Talib Kweli and Mos Def. Each killed it on their own, but Black Star shit together??!??! DAMN!! Plus halfway through their set, Common came out of nowhere and they did Respiration. WHAT!!!!!!!! Crowd went NUTS! Common has some ill energy about him when he performs, pause. Dude is nice.
Finally, Nas came out and did his best Miami performance yet. And to top it off, Wu-Tang made everyone love hip hop again. Even Ghostface was there. Lovely day.
Here are a few videos for those lost souls who didn’t make it to the show. Here are the best ones I could find. Props to Spen1 for upping this recap video:

One of the many Nas classics, “NY State of Mind”

Don’t sleep next year. Rock The Bells is coming back. Cheaa!!
