they make beautiful music, and put on an even greater show.
welcome to freshbasiL crew’s first ever blog collaboration, brought to you exclusively by Samy and myself. Two of the smoothest femme’s from around the hood.
Common and Erykah Badu joined together on Saturday night (8/4/07) at Club Chakra on South Beach for a private party sponsored by KOOL, Guerilla, GenArt and a few others. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Chakra is a sexy, high end club located on 15th and Collins. The club was great- much more intimate than your typical South Florida hiphop venue like Revolution or Studio A. Three levels of Asian inspired decor and amazing views of the stage.
San Fran’s own Dj Mike Relm was performing as we walked in. He’s well known for his live perfomances which he uses audio mashups and different songs along with video images all over the stage. I was glad that I was able to catch at least some of his live show. It’s really entertaining and he ended his set beautifully by instructing everyone to sing along to John Lennon’s “Imagine”. He had the lyrics up on the screens for the few who didn’t know the words..
Here’s a short clip of his set…
There wasn’t too much down time between sets and I’m positive everyone appreciated that. Common came out next (lookin’ beautiful as always).. Speaking of beautiful men- I propose that there be a section added to this site featuring them.
This performance doesn’t come at a much better time for Com. 14 years into his career- he finally lands the #1 spot for Finding Forever!!! Def. long overdue and well worth it..
In a sea of dreads, head wraps and afrOs, Com picks 2 women from the audience and brings them up to the stage for his obligatory 1 on 1 moment with each. Speaking of headwraps- I almost knocked one off the girls head that was in front of me. Definitely unintentional!!! But she was real cool about it and she was all about keeping the peace.
He performed “I Used to Love H.E.R” to his new single “The People” and everything in between. The live band featuring producer Kareem Riggins on the drums and DJ Dummy was a great addition.
Some of the tracks he performed (in order of recollection)
Testify
The Game
The People
The Light
Get Em’ High
Break My Heart
Driving Me Wild
I Used to Love H.E.R
Come Close
Here’s a clip of Common and Kweli performing Get ‘Em High. **My apologies for the movement- between asshole bouncers trying to confiscate your camera to the throwing your hands up some parts are a bit rocky.
Erykah Badu finished off the night. She has such an amazing voice and gets down like no other. She looks great for being 36 years old. Speaking of getting down- she’s due to release 3 albums in a 2 year span with the first album dropping in September and the remaining 2 just 6 months after each other. Jesus.
Despite leaving slightly early- I was content.. Another fabulous night in the Magic City.
Stay tuned for Samy’s edition.
Until next time…..
