Ohhh mannnn.. What a week! I am exhausted. I have not been able to catch any rest since last Tuesday, when the WMC madness began. Every night was jam packed with different events, in all parts of the beach. Too many dope parties to name, but there were a few that definitely stood out. The A-Trak party at the White Room, the RUB party at Purdy Lounge, the disco/boogie party at the Shelbourne hotel with Common & Jazzy Jeff, plus many, many more.
So being that I am so damn tired, this week’s Music Mondays will be a little different. Its time to mellow out. There was too much dance music going on this pat week that I need to go back to my roots. A force that was definitely missing this year was Jay Dee. I heard a few DJs shout him out, but it wasn’t as strong as last year. So this one is for him. I didn’t want to put up all the known classics, so here are some joints that you might have not heard before. Some different shit. Enjoy.
Common, Bilal & Mos Def - Reminisce. I’m gonna start off real strong, with one of my favorite Dilla beats. The drums on this track sound so raw, yet they fit perfectly with the smooth bassline and piano chops. Mos Def drops an incredible verse, and Bilal adds so much more soul to this track. I’ve heard Bilal saying an interview how Dilla pumped out this beat in like 10 minutes, with 3 different samples. Legend.
Pharcyde - She Said (Jay Dee Remix). Here is another remix Dilla cooked up for the Pharcyde. This one is real slow, with just enough bass to make your head bang the fuck out. Everything on this sound so crisp, even the singing in the chorus. Too dope.
Janet Jackson - Got Till Its Gone (Ummah Remix). Another classic Dilla beat with raw ass drums over some smooth wah-wah sounds. The original song was already pretty tight, but Dilla added more of his natural sound to the track. Q-Tip drops a nice verse as well. You’ll recognize where T.I. got his influence for one of his best singles. *cough cough*
Pharcyde - Y (Be Like That) (Jay Dee Remix). Pharcyde was an incredible group. They definitely were able to hold it down on there own. But I think there best work came from working with Dilla. This is one of the many remixes Dilla crafted for Pharcyde. Sick melody with a soothing bassline creeping throughout. Classic.
Mood - Secrets Of The Sand (Jay Dee Remix). This is one of those lost and forgotten tracks that many might not know about. Mood was a dope group based out of Cincinnati with the help from Hi-Tek on the beats. Dilla hooked them up with this incredible remix for one of their best songs. Again with the wah-wah sound and some raw ass handclaps, Dilla transformed this song on some next level shit.
Vivian Green - Fanatic. I haven’t heard much from Vivian Green. I’m not even sure where she is right now. But this song is a certified classic. The original is really dope, but this remix is just as nice too.
Erykah Badu - Cleva. I don’t think this is Dilla’s best track with Badu, but it is definitely up there. Badu delivers an amazing set of vocals for this fresh, jazzy beat. The snare drops in and out giving the track a nice bounce even though its real slow.
Q-Tip - Things U Do. Here is a nice Q-Tip track that wasn’t as big as it should have been . Dilla laces him with a great piano loop and heavy bass. Q-Tip does his usual thing, bouncing throughout the beat adding his own flavor. This shit bumps people!
